Surprise Yourself

Speak and open up your mind
It’s something you should do all the time
Keep exploring, seek and find
You know you might surprise yourself

So, here’s my questions to you. What have you been wanting to do lately but don’t have the confidence? Or what did you dream of doing when you were a kid that you haven’t even thought about  for years now? I don’t think it’s a coincidence that God put that dream in your heart. I think He wants to surprise you.

My kids often say the words “I can’t.”  They say (mostly whine) sayings like,
•I can’t do this math problem.•I can’t clean this whole room by myself!•I can’t reach the plates to set the table.•I can’t remember to put deodorant on everyday!•I can’t eat all my vegetables.•I can’t figure out how to use the broom and the dust pan at the same time!•

Being honest, I often say those same words, too – just with different circumstances. (Probably in the same whiny tone.)
•I can’t think of anything to make for dinner.•I can’t clean the whole house!•I can’t be nice to that person; they’ve really hurt me.•I can’t get up and read my Bible today.•I can’t climb a mountain like Daniel does.•I can’t be an amazing mom.•…I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.

The list goes on. Maybe you’ve got a list of can’ts too.  I always tell my kids that God gave them a mind and will help them problem solve to figure out how to fix the ‘can’t attitude.’ What if as adults we still have that same great mind, and God will help us figure out our ‘can’t attitude’ too? What if we take some time to slow down and think about how it would feel to really, truly live in this crazy world?

Talk without a taint or hold
The doubts that should embrace your heart
The calm and chaos of your soul
You know you might surprise yourself

The truth is, God has given us dreams for a reason! He wants us to move forward, taking steps toward Him, doing things we dreamed of only as young children when we had no idea how hard being an adult really was.

Take a pen and write this down
Draw something that can’t be found
And learn to walk again somehow
You know you might surprise yourself

Someone told me once that doing something you’ve never done will help your weekends feel longer. I encourage you today to do something new – something fun – something different – something needed – something you think you can’t…

You know you can surprise yourself
So let go and surprise yourself

•••I can’t hold that snake!! (But I did!!)•••
