From Highlights to God’s Light

Letting go of every single dream
I lay each one down at Your feet
Every moment of my wandering
Never changes what You see
I try to win this war
I confess, my hands are weary, I need Your rest
Mighty warrior, king of the fight
No matter what I face You’re by my side

A couple weeks ago, I had such a fun adventure with my friend, Mo. I decided to get my hair cut, and then I said to her, “I want you to highlight my hair.” Mo is not a beautician, but she always has super cute hair…soooo, why not?! I have never gone to a salon to have my hair colored, and I didn’t want to start now. I also hadn’t dyed my hair in ten years, but I wasn’t scared…I thought it’d be fun!

The conversation went a little like this:

Mo: You want meeeee to highlight your hair??? I did my own for like….lots of years.
Allison: Yes! I know you said that, so it’s time to get back on the horse.
Mo: But what if it’s bad?!
Allison: Then we just dye it brown again! But it won’t be bad. I’m easy going with my hair.
Mo: Omg. Okay, I’ll look up some tutorials.
Allison: Yayyy! I knew I could talk you into it!

And from there, the fun began. I trusted her completely. She had watched a bunch of youtube videos, and I assumed she knew what she was doing. We made quite a hilarious Instastory about it, and wouldn’t ya know?! It turned out awesome.

I wish it was this easy to trust God with my life situations.

Sigh. Life. It’s hard. We go through situations where we have no hope that things will work out. People have hurt us. Our worlds have been wrecked. Waves are crashing; wind is blowing, and we’re left feeling like we’re on an island all alone.

I want you to know – you are not alone. We’ve all been there. We have scars and pain and hurt. But I’ve also learned that if we learn to trust God first, he can work things out for good. That doesn’t mean He gives us everything we want, but that does mean He loves us and knows what we need. God always wants what’s best for us, and He can work everything out for good for everyone who loves Him.

Most times, this seems impossible. But what’s impossible to us is never impossible to God. He parted the Red Sea, then came back for a second parting of the Jordan River! Jesus was formed in a virgin’s womb, and he also turned water into wine!! He fed 5,000 and 4,000 with just a tiny amount of bread and fish. He ROSE from the dead!!!!!!!!

Guys, I don’t know about you, but this gets me pumped up. It helps me remember, that if I can trust Mo to color my hair (and she doesn’t even have much of a history with it), how much more can I trust Jesus with my life and my struggles?! He has proven himself over and over again. Even when it’s hard to see through our feelings, our crashing waves, and our roaring lions, if we turn to God, He’s got us wrapped up in His hands. He won’t let us go. He loves us and wants to work things out for our good.

Your ways are always higher
Your plans are always good
There’s not a place where I’ll go
You’ve not already stood

This (deep breath and exhale God’s peace) is just the soundtrack of our life.
